Description: University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey is employing Senior Inpatient Coder right now, this occupation will be placed in New Jersey. QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree in Health Information Management or a related field, plus RHIA, RHIT, and/or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) Certifications. Minimum of three (3) years (five (5) years preferred) of hospital inpatient coding experience in ICD-9-CM coding and DRG assignments preferably in a teaching environment with complex surgical, transplant, trauma, neurosurgery, OB/GYN, and neonatology service lines. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease processes. Knowledge of ICD-9-CM coding and POA guidelines for hospital coding. Knowledge of CMS, Medicaid, and third party payer coding. Encoder (Quantim) experience a plus. Equivalent combination of knowledge, education, training, skills and/or abilities will be considered in lieu of specified requirements. Must be able to read and speak English and possess excellent written communication skills. Must be able to read clinical staff handwriting within medical record. Must be detail-oriented, accurate, organized and work independently.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary purpose of the Senior Inpatient Coder position is to review hospital inpatient medical records and assign ICD-9-CM diagnosis and procedure codes that reflect the reason for admission and patient severity. Follows established hospital inpatient coding guidelines and utilizes Coding Clinic and other resources to ensure compliance with national coding guidelines. Assists the Assistant Director with training new coding staff and identifying opportunities for physician documentation improvement. d possess excellent written communication skills.
