Senior Inpatient Coder

The Senior Inpatient Coder position reviews hospital inpatient medical records and assigns ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes and procedure codes that accurately reflect the reason for admission and patient severit! y. Follows established hospital inpatient coding guidelines and utilizes Coding Clinic and other resources to ensure compliance with national coding guidelines. Assists the Senior Manager with training new coding staff and identifying opportunities for physician documentation and improvement.
Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management or a related field.
Minimum of three (3) years (five (5) years preferred) of hospital inpatient coding experience in ICD-9-CM diagnosis and procedure coding and DRG assignment, preferably in a teaching environment with complex surgical, transplant, trauma, neurosurgery, OB-GYN, and neonatology services. Equivalent combination of knowledge, education, training, skills and/or abilities will be considered in lieu of specified requirements.
Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease processes, Coding Clinic, POA, query guidelines. Knowledge of CMS, Medicaid and third-party payer coding, billing and c! ompliance regulations preferred.
Prior experience and/or u! se of an encoder (Quantim) and Epic electronic health record are a plus. Ability to balance multiple and changing priorities.
Must be able to read, write and speak English and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Must be detail oriented, accurate, organized and work independently.
Must be able to read clinical staff handwriting within a paper medical record and navigate through EHR documentation.
Credential Required: RHIA, RHIT, and/or CCS certified.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Position requires sitting 3/4 of the time and walking 1/4 of the time. Protective equipment not required.
